Knowledge Related to Pipe Caps

Pipe caps are used for being welded on the pipe ends or connected to the outer threads so as to close off pipelines, which have the same functions as pipe plugs. Pipe caps are similar to blind flanges, however blind flanges can be disassembled, while pipe caps can not. The designs of pipe caps include convex, conical shell, reducer, and flat cover.

Convex pipe caps can be classified into hemispherical pipe caps, oval pipe caps and dish pipe caps.  Hemispherical pipe caps are better than oval pipe caps, and oval pipe caps are better than dish pipe caps from the perspective of force. However, from manufacturing point of view, dish pipe caps are easier to be made than oval pipe caps, and oval pipe caps are easier to be made than hemispherical pipe caps. We can divided pipe caps into red copper pipe caps, iron pipe caps, stainless steel pipe caps, plastic pipe caps, etc. according to materials.

 According to pressure ratings, we can classify pipe caps into 17 kinds, and the pressure ratings are the same as American standard pressure ratings for pipes, including SCH 5s, SCH10s, STD, SCH40, XS, XXS, among which, STD and XS are the most commonly used. Pipe caps are not very common in industrial construction, after all, they are only used at the pipe ends for closing off the pipelines. Pipe caps have basically the same function as blind flanges, except that they can not be disassembled. Pipe caps are welded to the pipes, which have nearly the same connection types as blind flanges.

Above are the general applications of pipe caps. If we pay some attention, we will know that pipe caps have many kinds. Pipe caps can not be generalized, though pipe caps almost have the same literal meaning in Chinese as heads, they have differences. Heads are for connecting tops and bottoms of the vessel equipment(vertical types) or left and right parts of the equipment(horizontal types). Pipe caps can be screwed onto the pipes without the help of other pipe fittings.
